This small collection documents the social and political conditions, theaccomplishments, setbacks, and outlook of/for hired farm workers, migratory farm workers, andsharecroppers in the United States in the 1960s. Rural poverty, wages, child labor, health andsafety issues, housing, and education are prevalent themes, illuminated via annual reports to theBoard of Directors of the National Sharecroppers Fund and ephemera produced by the UnitedFarm Workers Organizing Committee.

The Independent Workers Association was organized by Eugene Nelson in the Rio Grande Valley in 1966. It affiliated that year with the National Farm Workers Association which then merged soon after with the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee to form the United Farm Workers Organizing Committee.
